Bicycle Longmont Holiday Bike Program - FREE PINT

LONGMONT --Buzz Feldman believes nothing should prevent a child from getting a bike for Christmas.

So, for the 24th year, Longmont's Holiday Bike Program -- Feldman's brainchild -- will allow hundreds of local kids to receive bicycles at Christmas.

"Last year, we had 439 bikes, and everybody got a new helmet," said Feldman, who started the Holiday Bike Program in 1988 with Bicycle Longmont.

The Longmont Fire Department and Ed & Ruth Lehman YMCA also are part of the program, which offers bicycles each December to families who cannot afford new bicycles.

This year's drive started on Labor Day and will keep going until Dec. 5, and so far, 100 bicycles have been collected and restored.

Each year, the Longmont Fire Department collects about 500 bicycles for the program. The donated bicycles are picked up by Jerry's Posse, led by Jerry Seguin, and restored at Sun Construction Co.
The bicycles will be ready for children to take home at the Y-Pals Family Christmas Party and Bike Giveaway at the Ed & Ruth Lehman YMCA, 950 Lashley St.

"The experience is magical for a child," Feldman said. "The kids need bikes, and a lot of families can't afford anything for Christmas. People need some help. They can get to the park and the library with those bicycles. It changes lives."

To donate a bicycle, drop it off at any Longmont Fire Station, at Left Hand Brewery, Oskar Blues Home Made Liquids & Solids or Oskar Blues Tasty Weasel Tap Room. The most-needed bicycles are those with 12-, 16-, 20- and 24-inch wheels for both girls and boys, although the organization welcomes tricycles, scooters and toddler cruisers for children.

"Our goal this year is (to give away) 400, so far. We've collected about 150 bikes and of those, we have 100 ready to go, but we still need a lot more bikes," Feldman said.

Geoff Mooney's REEB Ride

When Geoff's not drinking a beer, he's putting beer in a can. Geoff is the man behind the Oskar Blues Brewery can line. He and the boys come with the smart assed one liners on the bottom of the cans next to the dates.

Geoff is back on the bike after a few years off it chasing powder on those snow sticks. If you catch him in a lift line at Eldora be nice, he's probably packin' a Ten FIDY he's willing to share.

We've been doing the early ride thing, hitting Lyons trails at 6:30 for a pre-work day meeting.

Geoff's from the land of Ice & Snow and was appropriately trackin' "Spin Cycle" by Eyedea & Abilities while the 11/10/2011 version of Mama's Little Yella PILS was hitting the can.

Enjoy it.

Predictions: Minnesota Wild will win the Stanley Cup & Gopher Hockey will win the NCAA. He takes 1 lump of sugar and 2 lumps of milk in his coffee.

LONGMONT – What’s beer spelled backwards? It’s the name of a new mountain bicycle company launched by Oskar Blues.

The Longmont-based craft brewery, known for its canned beers such as Dale's Pale Ale, is looking to break into the mountain bike industry with its new company REEB, beer spelled backwards, Cycles.
Chad Melis, marketing director for Oskar Blues, said Monday morning that the company is manufacturing hand-made, steel, single-speed, 29er hardtail mountain bikes using the Gates’ Carbon Drive system.

Gates’, based in Denver, Carbon Drive system is a “belt” driven bicycle drive that replaces a standard chain, according to the company. Compared to a normal chain that requires lubrication and maintenance, Gates’ dubs its belt drive maintenance free.

The first batch of 20 REEB bikes sold, primarily to employees, quickly, Melis said. A full line is rolling out by the spring, with the next 20 bikes hitting the market around the end of the year.

In a market where multiple gears and full suspension are standard for many mountain bikes, REEB is taking a more simplistic approach and breaking it down to the basics.
Melis said the single speed rubber belt driven bike fits with the brewery’s style of simple out-of-the-box thinking.

“We look forward to going full-strength next year and trying to capture the essence of Northern Colo-rado riding and the terrain we ride up here,” Melis said.

To start REEB will offer two models around $1,200 for the frame, and between $3,000 to $4,000 for a full build out.

We were tied up with the HISTORY CHANNEL (more to come on that) so we were a bit late to the Colorado Cross Cup. But we were able to catch the Pro races & share a beer with fans while catching the commanding performances by Trebon & KFC.

The GATES CARBON DRIVE TEAM excelled in perfect conditions for the Belt Drive all weekend winning both races in the SS division, check out their race weekend update HERE.

KFC had a good gap after the first corner, Nicole Duke & Caroline Mani (French Nat Champ) chasing from the Gun. Georgia eventually passed Nicole to finish 3rd.

OB Fueled Salvegetti Bicycle Workshop

Salvegetti Bicycle Workshop just celebrated their annual bike party and good times were had by all. For the past three years Salvegetti has held this event and each year they have worked to celebrate those who promote cycling in Colorado and raise some funds for them at the same time.

This year one special lady and two groups received the special attention of the Salvegetti Bike Party fueled by Oskar Blues Brewery. The First was the City of Denver’s bike planner, Emily Snyder. This party was a surprise for Emily and when the 200+ attendees greeted her at the door with a huge thank you for all that she has done in the Denver cycling community she was left speechless.

As the party moved on the event ended with a raffle of bike swag, clothing and even a frame, which raised over $1000! There were two recipients for these funds, Bike Denver and the William Smith High School Mountain Bike Team.

Bike Denver is Denver’s local bike advocacy group who works to promote policy, infrastructure, and events that make Denver a better city for cyclists. www.bikedenver.org The William Smith High School mountain bike team is the first metro Denver high school mountain bike team and they are keeping it real on a shoestring budget! With the funds from the bike party all of the team members’ registration fees were paid for as well as a chunk of their clothing costs.Thank to everone for makin' this happen, cheers!

Ska Brewing Anniversary and Ride

We loaded up to visit out brothers in D-town for their 16th Anniversary....How could we not when they are throwing a beerfest party with The Toasters playing.

First we had to drop off a gift at Avery....not a bad Friday for them.

09/10/11 Winter Park Co, The Red Bull Final Descent, a 12-hour Downhill race combines both endurance and lap after lap of flying down a mountain, does life get any better than this?

I raced this as a Solo Expert and knew I'd be in for a beating since I was racing on my Epic XC bike instead of a plush downhill bike.I don't want to hold you in suspense, so I'll spill it: I took 1st place!!!

The course was down Boulevard - a black diamond run that I was to do 26 laps on. I had a rough start and flatted 3 times in the first 5 laps, apparently XC tires on an XC bike isn't burly enough for this course. I finally got into a groove and consistently putting in 22 minute laps. I was settling into the aches and pains that were developing and feeling good. At hour 9 this wonderful thing called "arm pump" was starting. If you're not familiar, it's a soreness that develops on the underside of the forearm from all the jarring descents. This got worse and worse every lap, the brake chatter bumps at the top were getting really painful.

On lap 22 my derailer hanger broke! I had a replacement hanger but the bolt was frozen on so tight that we stripped it trying to get it off.Out of desperation I went to my backup bike: My hardtail Stumpy with shitty brakes. Riding the chatter bumps was more painful than ever! The ride was so rough and my arms hurt so badly that I was in tears. This ended up being dangerous because sometimes I couldn't grab the brakes because everything was so jarring and I could barely hold on. I went straight back to the pit because I couldn't do another lap on that bike.

There was only 2 hours of racing left, I needed to put in a few more laps, but what to do??? I went back to my pink Epic, broke the chain, disconnected the rear derailer and duct taped the cable to the chainstay. I'm going chainless!!! I was back in business on the pink bike and put in enough laps to claim my 1st place position.

I finished my race and grabbed an Old Chub to celebrate the end of an epic day and shared the OB brews with old and new friends. Thanks to Oskar Blues for your support!.Race Stats: 52,000' of descending, 3 flat tires, 3 chainless laps, 2 red bulls, 2 bloodshot eyes, 1,600mg IBuprofen, 1 broken derailer hanger, 1 sprained thumb, and countless sore muscles.

Boulder Mountain Bike Allliance annual Sufferfest event upped the ante this year as it celebrated many achievements in 2011. The amazing send off point of Caribou Ranch was an amazing home base for an event that is likely to grow as word gets out. A large thank you to the Guercio family for sharing their little piece of heaven with our hands-on group of trail advocates. The two day event kicked off with a 37 or 50 mile ride followed by Oskar Blues food & brew and campout.

The group of over 125 rolled off from the line....the group included jeremy horgan kobelski and wife Heather Irmiger straight off their top races in the World Championships, congrats as they both rode to top 12 finishes.

Clean your bike and pack your gear, SufferFest is almost here! This year we're teaming up with the Caribou Classic to make this event better than ever.

Ok, it is time to let the cat-out-of-the-bag and let you know what we have been up to! Over the last several weeks, we have been working with the Guercio Family at the Caribou Ranch to design the best and most Suffer'est course in Boulder County. They have generously offered to let BMA members ride and camp on their property. This is no small gift as we all know and we all need to extend a warm thank you to them! Let me repeat: This is for BMA members only, VIP treatment, and a free backstage pass!!

The new course will start and finish on the Caribou Ranch and work it's way through to our beloved West Mag trails, Sign up now because we are limited to 100 RIDERS!

Final course prep on the 22 mile loop is being done by our course designer Jeff Vanderlinden and it is a real treat. Destined to become a cult classic, it has a similar feel to Laramie but feels like you're riding through a game preserve. Three antelope bucks are amongst the herd that hangs out on the ranch, while red-tail hawks patrol the skies. This course will reward the technically skilled rider who can keep his speed through a variety of terrain.

We woke in the morning & met at Oskar Blues in Lyons. We headed out over Picture Rock Trail and through Lefthand Canyon making our way to the Hops & Heifers farm to pick Hops.

before heading to the Crested Butte Arts Festival we rallied to Red Rocks to catch My Morning Jacket over a few dozen Dale's Pale Ale.a calm before the storm, the Jacket put a show on.
Friday at the CBAF kicked off with a new event, The Art of the Ride. It was a clinic with Dave Wiens and Doug Bradbury. Jason then kicked off the culunary portion of the event at the Opening Gala.

Day 5 of the Tour of BoulDurango was the big hitter, not much elevation but the the thing goes deep. The day ends up to be 130 miles from Crested Butte to Ouray. The Brick Oven crew certainly did a fare share of work providing tour updates and pulling at the front of the group most of the day but 130 miles is still a lot for a crew of beer drinking and fun loving fools....plus it was Steve Grossman's birthday so some celebration was in order.Ready for some serious saddle time....at least the first 20 miles were downhill.

4 breweries embark on a five day, 470 mile ride for charity and craft-brewing brotherhood
5 days ~ 17 brewers ~ 470 Miles ~ 42,000 Vertical Feet of Climbing

Boulder, CO - On Monday, July 18th 2011, 17 brewer-cyclists from Avery Brewing, Oskar Blues Brewery, Ska Brewing and Sierra Nevada Brewing will depart on their bicycles from Avery Brewing Company in Boulder to kick off the Third Annual Tour of BoulDurango: a five day, 470 mile odyssey over 6 majestic mountain passes from Boulder to Durango. En route, these 17 hearty souls will be stopping at craft breweries and brewpubs in an effort to bring together Colorado brewers, raise money for local charities, and encourage the spirit of collaboration and camaraderie that has taken hold in the craft beer industry.

The Tour of BoulDurango is the cycling incarnation of the attitude that these breweries have always taken towards the brewing business. "Craft beer isn't about getting rich and cutthroat business practices; it's about following your passions and doing what you love, it's about being part of your local community and working with people who are just as psyched to be in the business as you are" said Adam Avery, President and Brewmaster of Avery Brewing Company. Dave Thibodeau of Ska Brewing added, "We’ve had quite a few brewers from around the country express interest in this-- I think it has the potential to become huge, whether it remains a brewer’s tour and another fun way to hang out with fellow brewers while trying to make a positive difference in our communities, or one day possibly opens to the public.”

Last year Oskar Blues joined Avery and Ska on the tour, sans Dale Katechis of Dale’s Pale Ale fame, but this year he’ll be along for the ride. Steve Grossman and others from Sierra Nevada Brewing will also be joining their Colorado brewing brethren, growing this event outside the borders of Colorado for the first time.

Each evening, after the day’s riding is finished, the brewers are teaming up with other craft breweries along the course to hold fundraising parties, with profits from pint sales, raffles and auctions going to local charities. Participating breweries along the route include: Tommyknocker Brewing, Breckenridge Brewery, Eddyline Brewpub, The Brick Oven Restaurant, Ouray Brewing, Colorado Boy Brewery.

The ride concludes at 2PM on 7/23 at Ska Brewing in Durango with a Finish Line/Tapping Party for Wheelsucker Wheat Ale, a collaboration beer brewed by Ska and Avery to commemorate the ride. Proceeds will go to the La Plata County Safe Roads Coalition.

The G'Knight Ride is a first annual community cycling event and will be held in prospect Park, in the neighborhood of Prospect New Town on the south side of Longmont Colorado on S June 18, 2011. Enjoy either the 3- or 10-mile marshaled, controlled routes, featuring great rest stops, ride support, delicious food and OSKAR BLUES BREWS, live music, and much more!

Bicycle Longmont is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, comprised solely of volunteers, dedicated to making bicycling safer and more enjoyable in Longmont and surrounding areas. We accomplish this through advocacy, education and encouragement.

Kids' Holiday Bike Program
At Bicycle Longmont, Santa's Elves will repair used, no longer needed bikes and get them to kids whose families have a tough time during the holiday season. In some cases, parts from 2 or 3 bikes may be used to create 1 safe and rideable bike. Last year we were able to repair and hand out 439 bikes to kids in need.

Third stop in the Rocky Mountain Endurance Series

Event Highlights:
Race #3. Three races throughout the day for all abilities. RME Ridgeline Rampage Marathon, Half Marathon, and Wrangle the Ridge Race for Sport and Beginner XC distance racers. Be the first racers to christen this newly designed challenging 10-mile circuit constructed on the hills overlooking the town of Castle Rock and Pikes Peak. This tight course rips through Gambel Oak, Ponderosa and Pinyon Pine. Designed like the Front Range 60, the neutral aid station every lap provides excellent spectating opportunities and fast racing action.

Event Details:
Sunday, June 12. Ridgeline Marathon Race Start 8:00 am. Half Marathon and Junior RME races start at 2:00pm. No license required. Tents for support crews can be set up along the course at the neutral feed zone. Team vehicles can park in the expo parking lot. We will also have a free kid's race, cycling expo, fun rides, raffles and product sampling. Shake out the legs with the family at this exciting new venue.

Originally known as the Lyons Whitewater Festival, the Lyons Outdoor Games, was created 10‐years ago as a fund-raising vehicle for the Lyons Department of Parks, Recreation & Cultural Events. The event has evolved from an excuse for paddling buddies from around the country to come together for a day of play in the famed Lyons Whitewater Park, into a world‐class celebration of mountain sports. In addition to a full compliment of kayaking, biking, fly fishing, chainsaw carving and even dog events, the 2011 Games will feature numerous clinics and exhibitions put on by some of the world’s most elite professional athletes. As the Belt Busta's and OB REEB Machine were locked and loaded there was ONE final stop to make before we hit the road for Fruita 18 hours.
We met Taylor and #1 rolled in.....we loaded 'er up and headed for the desert.

The tapered head tube = stiff and good lookin' front end.
The Gates CDS drivetrain gives 'er that craft beer in a can awkward swagger.
Troy enjoy a G'Knight while erecting his tent under the glow of REEB #1.
Upon landing we wasted no time before heading out and hitting the pre-ride lap.

The birthday brew and views were enjoyed on a great calm before the storm.

It was fun to get back on a snappy 26 inch bike, particularly one that rips like this baby. What a great time to check out a new bike....HERE DIRT in the hills of the Front Range. The Gates of HELL. Drop the seat, point it straight & let the bike do the work

After a few days back on 26 inch wheels and suspension I'm feeling really confident heading into corners and technical area's hot. The fork is stable and is really taking on everything that I've seenm and this area is not at a shortage of veriable & difficult terrain. What a testing ground.

At just over 31 lbs and a bunch of travel Kwanzaa (named on the badge) or as I've called it QOTSA climbs very well.
Mother nature threw some flakes our way & the ground soaked them up and turned us Hero Dirt all ride.

Maiden Voyage: Maverick ML8 and new DUC 36

I visited Maverick Bikes on Friday to work on getting the new ride dialed in. Saturday morning came & I was ready to get out and rip. After riding a Spot Brand Single Speed for much of the last three years I was looking forward to riding something new. Get more details direct from Maverick on the DUC 36 HERE.Before I hit the dirt it was easy to see that the adjustability of the rebound in the DUC 36 over the 32 was greatly increased & functional. We headed up to a few spots but mostly Johnny Park, North Sheep Mountain and Coulsen Gulch to test this baby on the rugged rocky and steep terrain.

After riding a SS hard tail for a while it was an overall change of mental riding style. The fork felt supple on the front of the bike and confidence insipiring. Stay tuned for details as we get more hours & miles on this baby.

The view from the bottom of Coulsen Gulch. We decided to do an out-and-back on Coulsen to enjoy the moist dirt on the decent before heading out along the river and turning back for the climb back out.
After climbing out of Coulsen Gulch & enjoying the dirt on the short descent back to the car we enjoyed a smile and a Dale's Pale Ale while revisiting the ride. The dirt was great, a straight up POWDER Day.

Michael, Robin, Ryan and their friend Travis won the 2011 Rocky Mountain Grass Poloshipsin Durango last weekend. They won 6 our of 7 games, the tournament lasted 14 hours, they ended their last game at 11:45 at night under the lights. People are still in radical recovery mode. Such fun! Way cool for the Guillaume family and our "other son", Travis!!!!! There were 15 teams....check out all the details HERE via Purango Dolo.

The first race of the year is always a learning experience and the 2011 Rocky Mountain Endurance Series race #1 was no different. The Oskar Blues crew was joined by my girl Marily from Outdoor Divas as we geared up for what was the first ever race for a few in camp. Cheers to Brian Spotts and Marily for jumping into a long race as it was Brian's first & Marily's second. They both left the race with that earned smile only a difficult and fun bike race can provide...they'll be back.
An unprepared shot before 70 miles and 5.5 hours of singletrack, Marily rocked the Half-Marathon.
The Marathin rolls out past the Dale's Pale Ale RV.

70 Miles of single track later and glad to be just about off the bike, whew that one hurt.

‘Coolest thing ever’ in Lyons: Foo Fighters rock Oskar Blues

LYONS — The rock band Foo Fighters performed Monday afternoon at Oskar Blues in front of a select crowd as part of a private event.

The concert took place in The Barn, a structure that sits just west of Oskar Blues Grill & Brew restaurant and that once served as the brewery’s canning facility.

“It was the coolest thing ever,” said Gayle Gordon, on whose behalf, along with husband Ken Feldman, the concert was staged.

The couple were the local winners of the BlackBerry-sponsored Garage Tour Contest, which they entered through Denver radio station 93.3 FM. Contestants were asked to explain in writing why the Foo Fighters should play a show in their garage.

The concert in fact took place at Oskar Blues instead of the couple’s home, located up Longmont Dam Road, because the Foo Fighters’ road managers worried that an equipment truck would not make it up certain mountain roads, Feldman said.

The couple were allowed to invite 50 of their friends to attend the concert. Some came from as far away as Texas. After the show, they got to hang out at the Oskar Blues bar with band members, including frontman Dave Grohl.

“They’re like the nicest guys,” Gordon said. “They’re very down to earth.”

Grohl reportedly ordered several shots of Petrón tequila.

Oskar Blues learned that it might serve as the concert site last week, according to the venue’s talent buyer and sound engineer, Dave McIntyre. The engagement was not confirmed until Monday.

The performance began at about 4 p.m. and lasted about an hour and a half, venue general manager Chris Portillo said.

“It was better than our wedding,” said Ani Okun, who was in the audience with her husband, Bob. The Okuns, who own FastSigns in Boulder, came to the concert equipped with a banner that read, “Foo Fighters Rock Lyons, Colo.”

Grohl signed the banner with the words, “That was fun.”

The Okuns said they were in the front row for the show.

“The two of us had an amazing mosh pit going,” Ani said.

Feldman said band members remarked that playing to such a small audience in an intimate venue was more fun than playing in front of arena crowds.

“They seemed to be just as excited as we were,” he said.

The couple were restricted in who they could tell about the show, Feldman said. He said half the people he invited to the concert were told only to be sure to request off work Monday afternoon and to arrive at the appointed place.

“I said, ‘If you ever trusted us for anything, trust us now,’” he said.

The Foo Fighters’ latest album, “Wasting Light,” was recorded in Grohl’s garage.

The Garage Tour includes eight stops. The band was scheduled to play a garage in Dallas today.

The snow kept us out of the high(ish)country this weekend and the wind didn't make it too freindly down low either. Heil Valley Ranch BMA Posse

Heil Valley Ranch BMA Posse Volunteer Trail Project #4
BMA is partnering with Boulder County Parks and Open Space for trail maintenance on the Wapiti Trail at Heil Valley Ranch this spring.
We will meet at the the South trailhead off LeftHand Canyon, Geer Canyon at the pavilion at 8:15 AM. Our project site will be near the bridge above the meadow.
We will be working on an area that has limited visibility and north facing slopes and trying to improve the trail to improve user sight paths and drainage.
We will run till ~12:30pm with an option to stay longer if there is need and interest.
All volunteers must pre-register for this workday. If you are logged in to the website but don't see a sign-up section at the bottom of this page, it means registration is full - sorry!
