Oskar Blues Lyons Outdoor Games - June 11th to 13th

LYONS, CO (APR30, 2010) – The Oskar Blues Brewery Lyons Outdoor Games presented by Smith Optics to be held at Sandstone Park June 11-13, 2010

The Oskar Blues Brewery Lyons Outdoor Games presented by Smith Optics to be held at Sandstone Park June 11-13, in Lyons, Colo. In its 8th year, this thriving multi-sport competition now draws the country’s best whitewater kayakers and mountain bikers as well as thousands of spectators.

“People have really flocked to the Games in recent years,” says Lyons Parks and Recreation Director David Cosgrove. “The Lyons Outdoor Games are like the TEVA Mountain Games, but they have a much more hometown, grassroots feel to them. We have the world’s best professional athletes competing—such as kayakers Tao Berman, Joe Keck, and Scott Shipley, who actually lives here—but we also have plenty of opportunities for beginners to learn new skills and for the everyday athlete to test his mettle.”

The Games have also become a place for fly fishers to showcase their talents and for dog lovers to exhibit the aptitude of their well-trained pets. Organizers have added some new events in 2010, including the inaugural Dash and Bash 5k trail run, more bike and kayak races plus a couple of family events for anyone who likes a challenge.

“We are really excited about being in Sandstone Park again this year. We had such positive feedback from spectators, exhibitors and local business’s last year we feel it was a great move. We want folks to bring their bikes or any kind of alternative transportation to get around town to see all of the events from Bohn Park, Meadow Park and all up and down the river”, says Reed Farr event organizer and Lyons resident. “I have been part of the Games for several years, and it’s thrilling to see how they have grown and how much the Town of Lyons residents and businesses have embraced the event”.

This is the second year that the vendors and the bands will be located in the town’s centrally located Sandstone Park. The venue, says Cosgrove, offers more visibility for the Games’ sponsors, who will have tents and canopy’s set-up where the latest outdoor equipment will be displayed and sold during the three-day event. Plus, he adds, “it offers shaded, grassy areas for athletes to relax in between competitions and also for participants to get a beer, a snack, or listen to some of the great music that will be played all day.”

The mountain sports will take place throughout the town’s various world-class facilities: biking events will be located in Bohn Park, freestyle kayaking will take place at the Black Bear Hole, slalom kayaking will occur at the October Hole, and the creek race will happen on the South Saint Vrain River. Additionally, the dog events will take place at the Lyons Valley River Park Ponds for dog events, and the Kurt Carlson Skateboard Park will be the location for the skateboarding comp. On Friday night right after skateboarding the Yellow Design Stunt Team will perform a big air bike trick demo using ramps on the street next to Sandstone Park.

The event begins with a kick-off party in Sandstone Park, sponsored by Oskar Blues. Delicious BBQ and the brewery’s signature Dales Pale Ale will be served, in addition to a variety of other fine beers. Saturday’s events start with some bike comps in Bohn Park, kayaking freestyle at the Black Bear Hole (on the east side of Lyons across from the Black Bear Restaurant) and end with the Dash and Bash 5k trail run which culminates with a live music in Sandstone Park and a party later at Oskar Blues. Spectator friendly competitions will be held throughout the weekend including freestyle kayaking and creek racing on the Class V waters of the South St. Vrain, mountain bike short track racing and jump competitions. The dogs will be competing for speed and splash in the speed retrieve and canine cannonball competitions.

The Games also include clinics. “If you’re interested in casting a fly rod or learning how to loop a kayak, this is the event to attend,” Cosgrove adds. “We’ve got some of the world’s most elite athletes on board to teach these classes and do demos.”

“The volunteers and sponsors are already getting excited about this year’s Games,” adds Cosgrove. “If the success and numbers of participants and spectators of the past few years indicate anything it’s that this year’s event is going to be the biggest yet.”

Camping will be available in Meadow Park.

Tuesday Night Ride...Rain, Hail, Thunder, Lightning & a damn good time.

Last week we had a handful of riders show up at Redstone for a few Dale’s Pale Ale before we succumbed to the fact that the trails simply were unavailable for responsible riding. We held our heads high & headed to Oskar Blues to share the advantages of the MurCan Mug Club.

This week we had 13 redstoners show up in Left Hand Canyon despite the hail & rain that was coming down heavy. We showed up to find Eddie Clark’s truck parked & getting pounded by hail. We took our time & let the rain & hail slow a bit before heading up. There aren’t too many trails even close to being available to ride but Dave has the area dialed in & knows where things drain quickly & effectively. We headed up, up & up. Lee cleaned the entire climb & I single dabbed it on the SS with 3 hand checks…we’re gonna clean this sucka some time.

After some traversing the sun came out & light up the surrounding hillsides.
The decent was well drained & a freaking great time. At this point the group started to split as darkness was near after the slow start & a large group. The group shared additional lights with me & we made our way fireman hill before the final descent. The descent hadn’t drained quite as well & it was a bit sketchy & wet.
I’m glad the Redstone group shows strong on an evening of hail, rain, thunder & lightning….we held tight & rode few of the trails that were dry enough to ride responsibly. It was an evening that was worth sitting down over a few beers & bluegrass at Oskar Blues.

12 Hours of Mesa Verde - Malletheads!

Mountain Flyer Magazine Photo Stephen Eginoire

We made our first trip to the 12 hours of mesa verde for the 2010 version of the classic Phil's World trail system event. Spot Brand got me dialed in with a 39 x 20 CDS sprocket set up for the rolling fun terrain of the 16-mile course. I was invited to join Chad Cheaney & Robin Guillume on the 3 person Malletheads team. Chad started the race as I pulled out my camera to find the battery dead indication...bummer too since homeboy lit the running start up sporting his trademark wrangler cut off jeans & jean jacket along with a traveling mug of coffee. CC headed out on the bike in the top 5 & after losing a few spot on the flat area headed into the singletrack, he still say top 10 and finished right in there. I was given the 2nd leg & have to say it was most likely the best time of the day, no traffic & fresh racers around 8:30 am. The gear was smoking & I was abble to rally the rolling terrain leaning on the tacky morning dirt...WHAT A FUN LAP. I pounded it out as if I didn't have two more to do & came in with a respectable 1hr & 14minute lap. Guillume took the final of the first round laps & extended our lead in the SS team category as the malletheads held it the remainder of the day. The most interesting race of the day was the local legends team of Travis Brown, Daryl Price, John Tomac & Dave Wiens battled the Durango based Directory Plus/Zia/ Trek team down to the wire. Cale Redpath was able to post the fastest time & hold off Wiensy by about a minute & a half after 12 hours of racing to claim the 3 & 4 person team victory.

What a great trailsystem & event, a great bike racing vibe all around. Cheers to SKA Brewing for being great hosts!

5/15 - A Front Range Trail Condition Message from BMA

Front Country Trails Are Extremely Vulnerable
Please don't ride today
Springbrook Loop Closed to all use

First and foremost, THANK YOU for demonstrating restraint this winter. The trails are in better shape at the end of this winter than what we've seen in much drier years.

But we could undo all that this weekend. We are soaked, and even though the farmers love it, the trails are set up for a perfect storm of mud, bikes, and enthusiastic riders.

Here's how bad it is: Today OSMP is taking the unprecedented action of closing the Springbrook Loop to all use. It's a real mess up there, and braiding of the trail is already occurring. This is the first time in memory that OSMP has taken this action.

We applaud OSMP for taking this action. Sometimes you have to take this step to protect these precious assets.

Who knows how soon we will dry out? We strongly encourage everyone to make use of the sites below to determine if the trail is ridable. And don't forget to contribute to them if you have information others can benefit from.
