12 Hours of Mesa Verde - Malletheads!

Mountain Flyer Magazine Photo Stephen Eginoire

We made our first trip to the 12 hours of mesa verde for the 2010 version of the classic Phil's World trail system event. Spot Brand got me dialed in with a 39 x 20 CDS sprocket set up for the rolling fun terrain of the 16-mile course. I was invited to join Chad Cheaney & Robin Guillume on the 3 person Malletheads team. Chad started the race as I pulled out my camera to find the battery dead indication...bummer too since homeboy lit the running start up sporting his trademark wrangler cut off jeans & jean jacket along with a traveling mug of coffee. CC headed out on the bike in the top 5 & after losing a few spot on the flat area headed into the singletrack, he still say top 10 and finished right in there. I was given the 2nd leg & have to say it was most likely the best time of the day, no traffic & fresh racers around 8:30 am. The gear was smoking & I was abble to rally the rolling terrain leaning on the tacky morning dirt...WHAT A FUN LAP. I pounded it out as if I didn't have two more to do & came in with a respectable 1hr & 14minute lap. Guillume took the final of the first round laps & extended our lead in the SS team category as the malletheads held it the remainder of the day. The most interesting race of the day was the local legends team of Travis Brown, Daryl Price, John Tomac & Dave Wiens battled the Durango based Directory Plus/Zia/ Trek team down to the wire. Cale Redpath was able to post the fastest time & hold off Wiensy by about a minute & a half after 12 hours of racing to claim the 3 & 4 person team victory.

What a great trailsystem & event, a great bike racing vibe all around. Cheers to SKA Brewing for being great hosts!
